Esplanade Construction Update
The Hudson River Park Trust is building a new landscaped pedestrian esplanade between the Gansevoort Peninsula and West 14th Street as part of a federal transportation grant administered by the New York State Department of Transportation.
The new esplanade will be widened approximately 40 feet, allowing for an improved pedestrian experience with new landscaping, shade trees and seated areas. The existing arch will be preserved in place both during and after construction. The bikeway will be realigned to improve existing conditions, and a bus stop will be created near 14th St. for future transit service in this area.
After existing decks are removed from piles, work will occur in two main phases. First, new piles will be installed in the water to support the new esplanade platform, and then a structural deck will be installed above the piles.
Installation of utilities, railing, lighting and landscaping will occur during the second phase. The nature of the work and the narrowness of the site will require periodic closure and/or diversion of the existing walkway and bikeway. We appreciate your patience and understanding while we work to improve Hudson River Park in this area.
