Marine Science Takes the Stage at HRPK’s SUBMERGE

Marine Science Takes the Stage at HRPK’s SUBMERGE

Ready to dive into marine science? Our fifth annual SUBMERGE Marine Science Festival is just around the corner on Saturday, September 22 from 11:00 AM to 4:00 PM on Hudson River Park’s Pier 84. Presented by the HRPK River Project and dozens of science partners, this free, daylong celebration of our coastal waters brings marine science to life with interactive experiments, catch-and-release fishing, kayaking, opportunities to meet the creatures that thrive in our estuary and a Science Stage that you won’t want to miss.

From wild water experiments to live birds of prey, this year’s SUBMERGE performances, experiments and demonstrations will inspire budding scientists of all ages. In fact, we’re so excited about this year’s lineup that we couldn’t wait to give you a sneak peek!

Everyday Experiments Made Amazing

Science Bob presents flames at Submerge

Science Bob’s dynamo performances regularly delight audiences on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Live with Kelly and Ryan and Good Morning America, and you can catch him in person at SUBMERGE! Encouraging everyone to perform “Random Acts of Science,” Science Bob is sure to inspire us all to build more scientific discovery into our lives.

Penguin Puppets Bring Ocean Discovery

Penguin puppets present to kids at Submerge

The Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) brings the fascinating world of penguins to life with adorable puppets, teaching audiences about these unique creatures and about ocean health. Through science, education and inspiring people to value nature, WCS strives to save wildlife and wild places (like penguins and their habitats)!

Watch Water at Its Wackiest

An excited kid waits for the scientist to pour goo on his head

Water’s wildest properties are on full display when Mad Science takes the stage! See the striking ways water interacts with oils and fats, and catch water’s cohesion and adhesion in motion as you watch air push water through tubes. Plus, witness firsthand the importance of water conservation. Did you know it can take more than 2,000 gallons of water to make four new tires?

Get into the Music with Hudson River Wildlife

Funinships perform tunes for the kids at Submerge

Sing along and stomp your feet as the Funkinships’ catchy tunes bring estuarine creatures to life on the Science Stage. Featuring clever lyrics and cheerful beats, these performers will get the crowd bopping to the music and learning about the fascinating species that share our mighty Hudson.

Discover Birds of Prey in Your West Side Backyard

A red-tailed hawk perches on a lamp post looking down at the festivities at Submerge

Ever spotted a red-tailed hawk like this one along our riverfront? An interactive program from the Wildlife Institute of Eastern NY brings live raptors—such as hawks, falcons, owls and eagles—that are native to New York State right to our waterfront. You won’t want to miss the opportunity to learn about these majestic birds of prey up-close at HRPK’s Pier 84.

NYC Water Takes the Colorful Stage

Arm of the Sea theater company performs at Submerge

A SUBMERGE favorite, Arm of the Sea theater company creates interactive performances that spark the imagination while educating about about ecology and social action. At this year’s festival, their performance of “City that Drinks the Mountain Sky: Part 2” explores new challenges facing NYC’s water supply—major infrastructure repair, land-use practices and climate change—in a vibrant and engaging way.

At SUBMERGE you can see these performances and demonstrations in addition to the countless hands-on activities from our Estuary Lab educators and science partners all along HRPK’s Pier 84! A fantastic day of discovery awaits for science lovers of all ages, so be sure to mark your calendars. We’ll see you on September 22 from 11:00 AM to 4:00 PM! (Our rain date is September 23. You can check our Twitter feed for any updates.)
