A Groundbreaking Day for Chelsea Waterside Play Area!
On Tuesday we opened an exciting chapter for one of our best-loved play spaces, breaking ground on the renovation and expansion of our Chelsea Waterside Play Area. After two years of fundraising efforts, we’re thrilled to begin bringing this beautifully redesigned playground to life!
Since Chelsea Waterside Play Area opened in 2000, its water features and climbing structures have provided a popular playtime destination as well as a key resource for students from nearby schools and neighborhood families. Nearly two decades later, years of enthusiastic play have taken their toll, leaving beloved features in need of serious repair.
In early 2015, Friends of Hudson River Park, in partnership with the Hudson River Park Trust, launched a Capital Campaign to ensure the future of this essential Park asset, raising funds and gathering extensive input from the community. Over the past two years, we’ve raised $2.5 million thanks in large part to the efforts and support of our Playground Committee, especially President Catherine Juracich and the Capital Campaign Co-Chairs Melissa & Greg Wasserman; elected officials including NYS Assembly Member Gottfried, NYC Council Member Corey Johnson, and Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer; The Related Companies, Douglas Elliman Realty, LLC, and other generous donors.
Tuesday’s groundbreaking celebrated the dedication of this incredible Park community and launched construction of a totally reimagined play experience and a significantly larger playground. The design by Michael Van Valkenburgh Associates is innovative, sustainable, and tremendously fun, providing ample opportunities to climb, splash and slide while inviting immersive exploration and imagination-sparking play.
We're excited to bring this dynamically revamped playground to the neighborhood that has loved it so well, and look forward to seeing the new Chelsea Waterside Play Area filled with exploration, imagination and laughter for many years to come!
