The Hudson River Estuary is a dynamic system with changing water conditions influenced by variables including tidal, seasonal, and extreme weather impacts. Hudson River Park continuously monitors local water conditions to understand the estuary ecosystem and communicate its health to Park users.

HRECOS

Hudson River Park is a participating partner in the Hudson River Environmental Conditions Observation System (HRECOS) network. HRECOS is a collection of monitoring stations throughout the river gathering almost real-time (every 15 minutes) hydrological and meterological data, using YSI EXO-2 data sondes and Vaisala WXT series weather transmitters. Hudson River Park has two stations, one at Pier 25 and one at Pier 84. Year-round, these instruments collect and transmit water quality and weather data that is publicly available.  Visit the HRECOS website or click the image below to see live river conditions.

Park Water Quality Dashboard

River conditions from the HRECOS stations create the basis for the Park’s Water Quality Dashboard. Our River Project team collaborated with experts to develop this interactive dashboard to make the Park’s water quality and weather data accessible to broader audiences. We invite you to explore the dashboard’s charts and stories to learn more about our local waterways. The dashboard also includes a new model to estimate the presence of bacteria, helping to visualize the impact that NYC’s combined sewer system has on our local waterways. Thank you to our partners including Cantina, a design firm that led the project pro-bono, and Wade McGillis, formerly of Columbia University, for helping to make Park Data more accessible.
