U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Classes

VHF Radio for Paddlers

What would you do if a big ship was heading for you?

Marine radios are the best and most reliable communication on the water. Unlike cell phones, you can talk to ships around you without knowing their name or phone number, quickly and easily.

This 90-minute course is taught by a certified instructor of the U.S Coast Guard Auxiliary and provided free of charge. Advance registration is required; to attend, contact Drew Wilkins at the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary.

In this course, you will learn:

  • How VHF radios work
  • How to hail another vessel or issue a security call in NY Harbor
  • Using correct procedures and terminology
  • How digital selective calling (DSC) equipped radios work
