With New York City weathering its coldest winter in more than 20 years, Hudson River Park is experiencing rare natural phenomena, snow-covered landscapes and some of the most striking sunsets of the year.
Enjoy a peek of the beautiful winter scenery in the Park, and enjoy a little extra motivation to bundle up and take in the views.
Ice Floes on the Hudson River
This season’s sustained cold has brought a spectacular sight to the River: floating frozen floes along the shoreline.
Compared to many waterways, the Hudson River has one of the largest seasonal temperature ranges in the United States. In late summer, water temperatures can exceed 80°F; in winter, they can drop below 32°F.
That dramatic shift shapes the Park’s ecology. Warmer months may bring tropical strays like spotfin butterfly fish, jack crevalle or banded rudderfish to the estuarine waters. In winter, when temperatures dip low enough, as they have this year, frozen surface patches called floes can form — particularly in shallower areas near bulkheads or around pile fields. The result, a spectacle worth bundling up and seeing for yourself.
Snowy Scenes Across the Park
For Park visitors, snowy days bring a peaceful beauty and an opportunity for winter adventures. For our team, storms like the one we saw last month require hard work and planning.
Behind the scenes, our team works throughout snowstorms and after to keep pathways safe and accessible. Their efforts ensure that even after more than 11 inches of snow, the Park remains open and welcoming for anyone eager to enjoy snow days in the Park.
Winter Sunsets
In the Northeastern United States, the most vibrant sunsets arrive between November and February, and here in Hudson River Park, we have Manhattan’s front-row view.
Cold winter air holds less moisture and fewer particulates, allowing light to travel more cleanly through the atmosphere. The result? Deeper pinks, richer oranges and dramatic streaks of purple stretching across the Hudson River.
This is just a glimpse of the beauty — why not consider this your extra motivation to brave the chill and experience a moment of wonder in your west side backyard?
Even on the coldest days, the waterfront has a way of rewarding those who step outside. Layer up and make the most of it, spring is just over a month away, and we think this year it will feel extra sweet.
