Get to know Hudson River Park better through our Park Tours series, featuring Nature Walks and Shoreline Strolls.

Nature Walks

Learn about Hudson River Park’s wildlife by joining knowledgeable naturalists on guided nature walks along the Park’s esplanade.

Hudson River Park is home to many plant and animal species including over 100 species of birds. Peek into some of our gardens to discover butterflies, dragonflies and other interesting insects. Get to know the native plants that thrive in unexpected places in and around the River’s edge. Each Nature Walk is unique and offers a one-of-a-kind treasure hunt-like experience.

Nature guides will meet participants at the Christopher Street Fountain (Park entrance at Christopher St.) at 10:00 AM sharp. Please wear comfortable shoes and dress appropriately for the weather. Loud noises and barking tend to startle wildlife and reduce viewing opportunities—please be considerate and leave your dog at home.

Shoreline Strolls

Gansevoort Peninsula, which opened in 2023, is the largest stand-alone recreational space in Hudson River Park with its 5.5 acres of incredible public green space. From a sandy shoreline beach with tide pools to a pine grove, pile field and salt marsh, it is also one of the most fascinating sites to learn about local ecology.

During Shoreline Strolls, you’ll have the chance to learn more about these fascinating ecosystems from our River Project team. Grab your binoculars and try to spot some of the shorebirds seen regularly dabbling in our salt marsh, or see if you can spot some of the resident hawks that use the light poles (and sometimes even on the inspiring Day’s End public art installation, which was donated to Hudson River Park by the Whitney Museum of American Art) as a perch to find their next meal.

Shoreline Strolls tours meet at the salt marsh on the northern side of Gansevoort Peninsula. Tours begin at 3:00 PM and 4:00 PM and last approximately 45 minutes.
