No summer in the city is complete without free outdoor movies along the Hudson River, and this year we’re kicking off our Hudson RiverFlicks series with a brand new spin. On Wednesday, July 10—and again on August 14—HRPK joins forces with Shaolin Jazz to bring CAN I KICK IT? to NYC for the first time!
On the beautiful Pier 63 Lawn, we’ll screen The Warriors, a 1979 film that centers on an NYC gang’s epic urban journey from the Bronx to Coney Island. Through every scene, DJ 2-Tone Jones will score the movie with a blend of hip hop, soul and funk. The result is a live, remixed soundtrack to a cult classic—and a truly unique NYC film experience.
Conceived by Gerald Watson and produced by DJ 2-Tone Jones, Shaolin Jazz is a project that explores the stylistic connections between jazz and hip-hop. Their CAN I KICK IT? film series has captivated audiences since 2015, including a sold-out screening at the Kennedy Center. We can’t wait to watch the magic the happen on Pier 63—a perfect kick-off to a fantastic season of summer movies in HRPK.
Starting July 10, and continuing through August 21, HRPK will be screening iconic New York films every Wednesday at 8:30 PM (or dusk) on our Pier 63 Lawn Bowl. This year, we chose each movie for the way it highlights the magical, magnetic city we call home. And for the first time this year, you’ll be able to purchase wine and beer to accompany your cinematic enjoyment. Be sure to mark your calendars for all of our films: The Warriors on July 10, When Harry Met Sally on July 17, Moonstruck on July 24, Do The Right Thing on July 31,Tootsie on August 7, The Last Dragon (also live-scored by Shaolin Jazz) on August 14 and Big on August 21.
Our family-oriented Friday movie series on Pier 46 kicks off next week as well with Spiderman: Into the Spider-Verse. This Academy Award winner is a MUST-SEE on the big screen. We can’t wait for a whole summer of spectacular cinema in HRPK. Won’t you come kick it with us?
