Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a cost to book a SUBMERGE field trip?

No, SUBMERGE Marine Science Festival field trips are free for NYC schools. Priority is given to Title I schools.

How will the field trip be structured?

Upon arrival, groups will check in with a staff member at the welcome tent to receive their detailed itinerary. Your group will rotate through 3 stations that will include a variety of STEM activities.

What kind of activities will students participate in?

SUBMERGE features dozens of local organizations that are focused on marine science and our local waterways. Students will see wildlife, utilize science tools, participate in experiments and more!

Can our group visit more stations than assigned?

Due to the number of students we’re accommodating, we ask that schools follow their assigned itinerary. Please note that we reserve the afternoon timeslot of the festival for free exploration. If you’re interested in free exploration, we recommend you request an afternoon session.

Can we eat lunch on the pier?

Yes, groups are welcome to eat lunch on the pier. Please note that there is no designated lunch area. Seating areas, which include limited tables and a lawn area, are first-come, first-served.

Are we able to get into the festival before our designated time slot?

Due to pier capacity, it is important that school groups enter the festival at their designated time. If there are last minute vacancies, we may be able to accommodate your group early, but this is not guaranteed. If your group has to cancel, please let us know as soon as possible so we can open that timeslot to other groups.

What is the drop-off address for school buses?

SUBMERGE Marine Science Festival is located on Hudson River Park’s Pier 84 at W 44 St. The address for Pier 84 is 555 12th Avenue. There is a designated bus drop off and pick up area just south of Pier 84, outside the Circle Line cruises at Pier 83.

What are the closest subway trains?

The following subway lines and stations are within a 20-minute walk of Pier 84:

  • A, C, E trains: 42nd Street–Port Authority
  • 1, 2, 3, N, Q, R, W, 7 trains: Times Square–42nd Street
  • B, D, F, M trains: 42nd Street–Bryant Park

Can I bring students on Saturday?

Yes! Saturday is free and open to the public, with no scheduled itinerary. There is no registration required for Saturday’s festival. We encourage students, teachers and families to explore on their own during this free event!

What happens in the case of inclement weather?

SUBMERGE Marine Science Festival field trips will still move ahead with light rain. If there is lightning or thunder, the festival will have to close due to safety reasons. We will do our best to inform teachers as soon as possible in the event of cancellation. Unfortunately, if Friday’s festival is cancelled, field trips will not be rescheduled. Groups are welcome to attend for a self-guided experience at Saturday’s festival.
