Visit the Wetlab on Saturday, June 10 to celebrate World Fish Migration Day!

In celebration of World Fish Migration Day, our Wetlab will open to the public to teach visitors about our native fishes and show how we survey for local species. You can visit us at the Wetlab from 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM to take a tour of our aquarium. During a visit you can help us pull up our fish ecology traps and try your hand at catch & release fishing.

This is a special celebration that marks the importance of migratory fish species as a way to help raise awareness about conservation in our local waterways. From American eels to Atlantic sturgeon and lined seahorses, many of the fish that make their home in the Hudson River Watershed are migratory. This means that they move around to different locations based on the season.

While migrations happen for many reasons, including temperature shifts and reproduction, all migratory species depend on the health of multiple environments throughout their lives. For example, as an anadromous species, adult striped bass spend most of their time in the Atlantic Ocean, but each year they travel into the Hudson River to lay eggs that will hatch into the next generation of striped bass, so both of these environments are important to their survival.

If you are interested in joining in the fun of World Fish Migration Day but can’t make it to the Wetlab, you are in luck! World Fish Migration Day is being celebrated throughout the Hudson River and New York Harbor.
