Habitat: Estuaries and muddy substrates
Diet: Forages for algae, decaying organic matter

 

 

 

 

 

Fun Facts:

  • Mud dogs are deposit detritivores that will eat nearly any organic matter
  • Their species name means “common”, and indeed they are incredibly numerous 
  • They belong to the family Nassaridae meaning “wicker basket”
  • They overwinter in the mud, using their siphon as a snorkel
  • Hard, calcareous shell protects them from many predators, but not Blackfish!
