Common Smoketree

Cotinus coggygria ‘Royal Purple’

The Royal Purple smoketree can be found in the two half-moon garden beds at Clinton Cove and in Greenwich Village across from Pier 45. With their purple foliage and flowers, these trees create a stunning hedge from spring to fall. Their striking flowers look like vibrant clusters of smoke, thus their name.

Origin: Southern Europe and Asia
Lifespan: 20 years
Height: 15 to 25 feet

What makes Smoketrees unique:

  • Smoketrees have chemicals within their sap that are used in shampoos and toothpaste.
  • The smoketree was introduced into America in 1656.
  • Smoketrees can be cut back to the ground and will pop back up with lots of small shoots to create a small bushy tree.
