Deodar Cedar

Cedrus deodara

Deodar cedars look like they grew right out of a Dr. Seuss story. Considered by tree lovers to be the most graceful of cedars, the deodar cedar can only be found in Hudson River Park’s Chelsea section, gracing this area’s lawns and natural landscape.

Origin: Western Himalayas
Lifespan: Up to 1000 years
Height: 40 – 70 feet

What makes deodar cedars unique:

  • Deodar wood is used as a building material due to its durability, rot resistance and fine, close grain.
  • In its natural habitat, the Himalayas, the tree is known to grow up to 250 feet tall in the forest.
  • The name “deodar” derives from Sanskrit that means “timber of the gods.”
